I'm sorry to report the passing of Leonard "Red" Balaban, who died on Sunday at 84.
He kept Eddie Condon's club operating for 10 years and helped perpetuate a revival
in Dixieland. Many may not know that his father, Barney Balaban, was president of
Paramount Pictures from 1936 to 1964 (quite a long tenure for the movie business!)
and Barney and brother A.J. launched numerous movie palaces including the historic
Chicago Theatre. Red's sister is Judy Balaban, who was one of Grace Kelly's bridesmaids
in Monaco, and actor Bob Balaban was his first cousin. He left his cattle ranch business
to launch a second career in jazz! More details soon.

Why do shops have signs, “GUIDE DOGS ONLY?:
The dogs can’t read and their owners are blind.
