(gratuitous self-promotion)... The Gutbucket Jug Band been around for > 40 years with fairly constant lineup .. never made any $$ but had a lot of fun..could never afford a string section (ie fiddle player)   other than banjo & guitar.. here's a link that connoisseurs of eclectic rubbish may enjoy

That was nice! I used to play 6 & 7/8ths on my radio show quite often. I think the only band that comes close to that style is the Cheap Suit Serenaders, (maybe with a bit more energy and "fun") but there probably are a few more groups around we haven't heard of very much...
Check the Jug Band lists for other possible activity - there are quite a few that cross into string band territory.
