List Mates,

I was recently contacted by the Director of In-Game Entertainment for a baseball team in a nearby town regarding a Mardi Gras night they were having. They wanted us to play for 45 minutes before the game.

I told him that I was already booked that night but could help him get a good band. I asked what his budget was. As expected, he wrote the following.

*(******

Our payment would come in the form of trade. We can provide tickets and advertising in-game and through social media leading up to the event. We would mention their name in our pre-game and do a thank you mention to them in-game. We are expecting 3,000-3,500 people for the night.

*********

Here is my reply:

I am sorry. I am a professional musician. I do not work for free.

Whenever I am presented with this sort of offer, I wonder, would the presenter work for free? How would he pay his bills, home mortgage or rent, food, etc.

Remember, musicians who will play for free are amateurs. You pay for what you get. You pay nothing, you get nothing.

I doubt very much if you are working for free and that very many of the staff of the ball team are working for free.

Good luck in your endeavor.

Regards,
