>Hi, A friend of mine, a traditional trombone player, is planning a visit to
New Orleans in October. He is not certain whether he should bring his
trombone with him. He'll be travelling to NYC and Las Vegas in addition to
NOLA.
Any advice? Cheers, Marek
Hi, Marek. I can't advise you on where to hear jazz there, but I will stick
my neck out & say he should just go along & listen. Carting a trombone to
all the places he is going to can be a drag. I know there are a lot of
people on this list that think it is grand to go to places & sit in, but I
really think it's just nice to go and hear others play.
My thoughts are is that I know how I sound (& don't have a need to prove
anything!), and prefer to hear how others sound.
After all the comments on trombone solos recently, I hope I don't start a
whole string on this new subject. It is really just a suggestion to your
trombone friend reflecting my own feelings on the subject of sitting in.
His mouthpiece, for daily chops practice in his hotel room, is a must, of
course.
Jim
