SEPT. 8 - JAN SUTHERLAND & JERRY MacKENZIE
SUN., SEPT. 8
STJS Jazz Sunday with guest artists
JAN SUTHERLAND & JERRY MacKENZIE

2330 Fair Oaks Blvd. • Sacramento, CA 95825
Jan & Jerry will be joined by local musicians Jim Maihack, Larry Salerno, Renard
Perry, Bill Dendle, Dave Johnson, Dexter & Bob Williams, John Cocuzzi, and Tim Metz.
Youth band at noon: The Bob Williams Legacy Band led by guitarist Devan Kortan.
Join us for a day of trad jazz, swing, blues, and great dance music!
Jan Sutherland and Jerry MacKenzie met in Sacramento and have been making music
together for thirty years since. Jan claims that she "came from a choir start, and
discovered a love for the blues long before it was healthy to do so!"
Jerry was fortunate to have a formal music education background, and he discovered
his love for Jazz early in life. With the existence of STJS and its great jazz
festival every year, Jan & Jerry found a nurturing spirit here in Sacramento that
was a catalyst for producing great bands. Hence, the birth of Custer's Last Band
was no surprise. During the 10 years of "Custer," Jan and Jerry were honing their
skills with some of the best musicians Sacramento had to offer. After moving to
Southern California for work, the couple started the band Prime Time, and also
ventured into the world of Big Band music. Nothing stays the same for long!
Currently, both Jan and Jerry are playing with a banjo quartet. (Jan playing
stick bass.) They are also working with a 4-piece, early-rock group and helping run
the Lakeside Jazz Club in Lake Elsinore, CA. They find it truly delightful to see,
play with, and chat with old friends again, so come out and reconnect with them
this Sunday, Sept. 8.
JAZZ SUNDAY - $8 for members and $12 for non-members.
Student members (age 12-20): $5; student non-mem.: $7. Under 12: free.

HOT JAZZ JUBILEE
SUCCESS for the Sacramento Area's new jazz festival:
the Hot Jazz Jubilee!
Labor Day Weekend brought the inaugural HOT JAZZ JUBILEEto the MARRIOTT HOTELin
Rancho Cordova, CA (east of Sac.). Every day was full, and the music was fantastic!
There was a nice balance of new and familiar bands -- from trad & swing to zydeco,
with a sprinkling of other styles. The event was led by Ken McMurrayand run by volunteers
and familiar faces from Sacramento, Monterey, and elsewhere. Naturally, there'll
be some adjustments and improvements (this being the first year), but overall,
the event was so well received that Ken began selling badges on Monday for the 2nd
annual Hot Jazz Jubilee (2014)!
Some of the highlights included a Friday afternoon "Welcome Party" (poolside), a
Wine tasting event sponsored by ZAP Creative Group, a well-catered Patrons Lunch, late-night jam sets led
by Bob Dragaand Jason Wanner, Sunday morning gospel sets, and a Diva Set featuring
Yve Evans, Big Mama Sue, Shelley Burns, Sherri Colby, and Meschiya Lake. KUDOS to
the amazing and courageous Ken McMurrayfor being a visionary, a passionate go-getter,
a saavy networker, and all around super-nice guy!
In the months ahead, visit the website for coming details about next year's Hot
Jazz Jubilee, and to view photos from this year's.
