I never knew this, but it's apparently at least half true; this confirms it
for flights en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Flight_number
<http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rail_directions> , but I can't find a
confirmation for train times.

Someone once mentioned to me that if they were train numbers rather than
times, that they were wrong.  Trains were odd numbered in one direction,
even in the other direction.
