Following Maryk's Boogie Woogie Twins, this fine album, which I have, may be of interest. The others are included because they're too fiddly to delete!

It was not until 1934 that Hampton started to work seriously with the vibes and became a specialist with the instrument. Two years later he was playing with Benny Goodman, Teddy Wilson and Gene Krupa!

> ROY HAYNES
> THREE CLASSIC ALBUMS PLUS (WE THREE / JUST US / OUT OF THE AFTERNOON)
>
> AVID Jazz here presents three classic, and some hard to find or expensive Roy Haynes albums plus including original LP liner notes on a finely re-mastered and low priced double CD.
> "We Three", "Just Us" and "Out Of The Afternoon" plus side two of "Jazz Abroad"
> "We Three" recorded in 1958 finds Roy accompanied by two old friends from the Five Spot, Phineas Newborn on piano and Paul Chambers on bass. Newborn had loosened up since he had played with Haynes earlier in the year at Birdland where his playing had often been criticised for overplaying. As he is quoted in the original liner notes talking to Cannonball Adderley…."I’m just playing less". "Just Us" recorded a couple of years later in 1960, Roy Haynes is again in his favourite trio setting here joined by Richard Wyands on piano and Eddie De Haas on bass. "What I need " he explains in the original liner notes " is men who can play crisp and fast and also play slow and with a feeling. In a trio every man is exposed and everybody has to be able to make it all the time". "Out Of The Afternoon" featuring a quartet this time as we jump forward another two years to 1962. Same location but a very different band! Roy Haynes of course at the drumstool alongside the legendary multi instrumentalist Roland Kirk on tenor sax, manzello, stritch and flutes. Tommy Flanagan on piano and Henry Grimes on bass. The presence of Kirk unsurprisingly stretches the band in lots of different ways and the result is summed up in the words of Stanley Dance as "Snap, crackle". "Jazz Abroad", is quite literally an album of two different sides with side one featuring Quincy Jones and side two featuring Roy Haynes. Unavailable except on vinyl AVID is please to bring these tracks to CD. The Quincy Jones side does not appear on our release and will be featured on a future Quincy Jones project. We have, however left the artwork in its original form. Side two of "Jazz Abroad" recorded in Sweden in 1954 features Roy Haynes in a more relaxed and informal mood than the Quincy side. Roy is joined by bassist Joe Benjamin plus two members of the Illinois Jacquet band, Sahib Shihab on baritone and alto sax and Adnam Aceo on piano. Completing the line up are two Scandinavians Bjorne Nerem on tenor sax and Ake Persson on trombone.

> TOMMY FLANAGAN
> FOUR CLASSIC ALBUMS (JAZZ IT'S MAGIC / THE KING AND I / TRIO OVERSEAS / THE CATS)
>
> AVID Jazz here presents four classic and some hard to find or expensive Tommy Flanagan albums including original LP liner notes on a finely re-mastered and low priced double CD.
> Never the most high profile or highly regarded jazz pianist, possibly because of his undynamic approach, self effacement and modesty, Tommy Flanagan is however highly regarded amongst his fellow musicians. He has been the pianist of choice for many classic jazz albums including Coltranes "Giant Steps" and Sonny Rollins’ "Saxophone Colossus"
> "Jazz……It’s Magic", "The King And I", Trio Overseas" and "The Cats"
> "For Jazz…..It’s Magic", recorded in 1957 when Tommy was just 27 years old he is joined by a fine group of up and coming musicians. Curtis Fuller on trombone, Sonny Redd on alto, George Tucker on bass and Louis Hayes on drums. This is a hard to find or expensive early classic which is even difficult to find as the re-issue bearing Tommy Flanagan’s name as the leader! "The King And I" was originally released under trumpeter Wilbur Harden’s name in 1958 and is now also very difficult to find. The re-issue under Tommy Flanagan’s name and titled "Plays the Music Of Rodgers & Hammerstein is again, also hard to find or expensive! The quartet which includes Tommy on piano, Wilbur Harden on trumpet, George Duvivier on bass and G.T.Hogan on drums take on the music of Rodgers & Hammerstein’s "The King And I" and brings to the classic tunes a jazz edge all the while leaving the fine melodies in tact and recognisable! "Trio Overseas" recorded in Stockholm in 1957, is often best remembered for its clever cover artwork (check it out and work it out, on our cover)! However the music is of course paramount and here we have another classic Flanagan outing. The trio comprises Tommy on piano, Wilbur Little on bass and the legendary Elvin Jones on drums, all from the J.J.Johnson band who had been touring Europe when Tommy started to garner rave revues and had decided to go out on his own after Johnson had disbanded the group back in the States. "The Cats" recorded in April 1957 and aptly named as it features one of the greatest jazz cats who ever played the tenor…………Mr..John Coltrane. Fellow cats include Idrees Sulieman on trumpet, Kenny Burrell on guitar. Doug Watkins on bass and Louis Hayes on drums.

> JUNIOR MANCE
> THREE CLASSIC ALBUMS PLUS (JUNIOR / THE SOULFUL PIANO OF JUNIOR MANCE / AT THE VILLAGE VANGUARD)
>
> AVID Jazz here presents three classic Junior Mance albums including original LP liner notes on a finely re-mastered and low priced double CD.
> "Junior"; "The Soulful Piano Of Junior Mance"; "At The Village Vanguard" and 7 of 9 tracks from "Big Chief"
> Welcome to the natural unforced piano stylings of Junior Mance. Recorded in New York in 1959 "Junior" finds Mance in the company of Lex Humphries on drums and the inimitable Ray Brown on bass. Junior has a new trio for the 1960 date "The Soulful Piano Of Junior Mance". Joining him are Ben Tucker on bass and Bobby Thomas on drums who form a tightly knit trio as evidenced in the mere 2 ½ hours it took them to record the album! February 1961 saw the club debut of a new Junior Mance Trio at the Village Vanguard. Alongside Junior was bassist Larry Gibbs and drummer Ben Riley both on "loan" from the bands of Eddie "Lockjaw" Davis and Johnny Griffin. The Mance Trio, having played with all the above musicians as a quintet was able to create its own strong impression, as noted in the original liner notes "he may not have a big band but he does have a very big trio". "Big Chief" recorded in New York in 1961 finds Mance in another trio with Jimmy Rowse on bass and Paul Gusman on drums. On this set the trio play the music of WC Handy and Thelonious Monk.

> CHRIS CONNOR
> FOUR CLASSIC ALBUMS PLUS (SINGS LULLABYS OF BIRDLAND / CHRIS / THIS IS CHRIS / CHRIS CONNOR)
>
> AVID Jazz here presents four classic Chris Connor albums plus including original LP liner notes on a finely re-mastered and low priced double CD.
> "Lullaby Of Birdland"; "Chris"; "This Is Chris"; "Chris Connor" and side one of "He Loves Me, He Loves Me Not".
> A series of firsts greet our first selection of our tribute to legendary jazz vocalist Chris Connor, "Sings Lullaby of Birdland". Her first job singing with a trio, her first recording contract and her first LP record! The trio in question comprises Ellis Larkins on piano, Everett Barksdale (from Art Tatum’s band) on guitar and Beverly Peer on bass. Her second album "Chris" features tracks from her first date for Bethlehem which were arranged and conducted by Sy Oliver. For her third album "This Is Chris" her reputation was beginning to grow as can be seen in her fine company of musicians. Chris is joined by Ralph Sharon on piano, Milt Hinton on bass, Osie Johnson on drums, Joe Puma on guitar, Herbie Mann on flute and Kai Wiinding and JJ Johnson on trombones. Her performance is one of an artist who has arrived, an artist who has established herself amongst her contemporaries. As these three albums we made up of selections from Bethlehem sessions from December 1953 - April 1955 we have presented the tracks in chronological order instead of album order. On "Chris Connor" from February 1956 Chris once again shows off her ability to choose interesting and unconventional songs, often long forgotten or overlooked. Moving away from her jazz roots for another 1956 recording date Chris "turns frankly sentimental" for "He Loves Me, He Loves Me Not". Chris is here accompanied by a large orchestra made up of strings, woodwind, reeds and rhythm, conducted by Ralph Burns who also wrote the arrangements.

> KENNY DREW
> FOUR CLASSIC ALBUMS (INTRODUCING THE KENNY DREW TRIO / THIS IS NEW / TALKIN’ & WALKIN’ / JAZZ IMPRESSIONS OF RODGERS & HART - PAL JOEY)
>
> AVID Jazz here presents four classic (and hard to find or expensive) Kenny Drew albums including original LP liner notes on a finely re-mastered and low priced double CD.
> "Introducing Kenny Drew"; "This Is New"; Talkin’ & Walkin’" and "Jazz Impressions of Rodgers & Hart - Pal Joey"
> Perhaps unfairly overlooked in a crowded field of great jazz pianists around during his time from Monk, Bud Powell, Horace Silver to Wynton Kelly, Kenny Drew finally got to record this his first album in 1953. Having established himself at last through playing with the likes of Coleman Hawkins, Stan Getz and Lester Young he and his fine quartet were finally on their way and touring through 1952 and 1953. Here he is joined on "Introducing Kenny Drew" by Curly Russell on bass and the inimitable powerhouse Art Blakey on drums. For "This Is New" recorded through March and April 1957, Kenny’s reputation was now reflected in the band members he was attracting. Here we find him in the company of Donald Byrd on trumpet , Hank Mobley on tenor, Wilbur Ware on bass and G.T.Hogan on drums. This is current jazz, played by young musicians with considerable experience in the post or hard bop school coming up via the influence of Bird, Dizzy and Monk. "Talkin’& Walkin’" features the Kenny Drew Quartet from 1955 with Joe Maini on alto and tenor, Leroy Vinnegar on bass and Lawrence Marable on drums. The message here is one of simplicity……………keep it relaxed and natural, honest and unselfconscious. Finally "Jazz Impressions of Rodgers & Hart’s Pal Joey" a trio recording from New York in 1957 with Wilbur Ware on bass and Philly Joe Jones on drums. Here Drew takes five selections from the original Broadway show and adds three more Rodgers & Hart classics from the movie version to create "extremely meaty and rewarding material to work with". All four albums are plus have been digitally re-mastered. Some are also currently hard to find or expensive, so Avid are pleased to be able to make them available once again.

> AVID Jazz here presents four classic (and hard to find or expensive) Bud Shank albums including original LP liner notes on a finely re-mastered and low priced double CD.
> "Blowin’ Country"; Bud Shank with Bill Perkins/Shorty Rogers"; "Bud Shank And Three Trombones" and "Jazz At Cal-Tech"
> For our second excursion into "Shank-land" we kick off with the excellent "Blowin’ Country" (which has nothing to do with country music so "don’t panic!). This fine album sees another collaboration between two ex- Stan Kentonites, Bud Shank and Bob Cooper who both can be heard trading licks across tenor and alto sax, flute, oboe and bass clarinet. Joined by familiar "Shankites", Claude Williamson on piano, Don Prell on bass and Chuck Flores on drums. Our second release is an album of two sides……….on the first Bud is joined by another long term collaborator, the alto and tenor saxophonist Bill Perkins alongside Hampton Hawes on piano; Red Mitchell on bass and Mel Lewis on drums. The second side features Bud with the writer, arranger and musician Shorty Rogers accompanied by Jimmy Rowles on piano; Harry Babasin on bass and Roy Harte on drums. Shorty wrote all the selections and plays flugle horn throughout the set. CD2 kicks off with "Bud Shank And Three Trombones" which as they say in the ads, does just what it says on the tin……..or in this case cover! It links Bud on alto with the three valve trombones of Bob Enevoldsen, Maynard Ferguson and Stu Williamson (brother of Claude). The object being as it states on the original liner notes……"to place Shank’s alto in juxtoposition to a full section of valve trombones to enable him to play the role of a complete reed section against a three man brass team……………..instrumentation almost unique in jazz". The rest of the band is made up of long term associate Claude Williamson on piano, Joe Mondragon on bass and Shelly Manne on drums. We conclude with "Jazz At Cal Tech" recorded live in 1956 at the California Institute of Technology to an appreciative audience of science and engineering students. Shank is again joined by Bob Cooper on tenor and oboe, Claude Willamson on piano, Don Prell on bass and Chuck Flores on drums. All four albums are plus have been digitally re-mastered. Some are also currently hard to find or expensive, so Avid are pleased to be able to make them available once again.
