Come experience and learn about different styles of traditional
jazz in Capistrano Hall on *Saturday, February 9th* at the Trad Jazz Youth
Band Festival (TJYBF). This event is co-sponsored by Sacramento State
University Jazz Studies and Sacramento Traditional Jazz Society with
support from the STJS Foundation and the Trad Jazz Educators Network.
Elementary, middle school, high school and college jazz
ensembles from the west coast and Utah will perform in three venues from
8:00am-5:00pm in this non-competitive, scholastic jazz festival. According
to Jazz Studies director Steve Roach, “It is important that our young
musicians are taught how to play jazz while enjoying the learning process
through every means available.” He looks forward to welcoming all the
directors and student musicians to the campus to perform for the festival’s
distinguished line-up of professional jazz adjudicators, clinicians and
performers. Following each band’s performance, the musicians remain
onstage for live feedback. The clinicians will use microphones so that the
audience, too, can learn from their comments along with the band.
If you ever wondered how to enhance your understanding of
improvisation and traditional jazz, this festival is the place to be! The
general public is invited to attend lead sheet clinics that run throughout
the day on the second floor. Also on the second floor throughout the day,
the new *Jazz Essentials* series debuts with the first module on *Ear
Training*. At noon, there will be joint clinician and band director jam
sessions in Room 143. In the mid-morning, special guest trombonist from
Los Angeles, *Scott Whitfield*, and festival clinicians Bob Draga, Eddie
Erickson, Jason Wanner, Ron Jones, and Bob Sakoi will demonstrate,
“Instrument Roles in Traditional Jazz.” Throughout the day on second
floor, students will have an opportunity to jam with selected STJS Gold
Card musicians in the newly expanded Tailgate classroom. The Showcase and
Awards Ceremony will conclude the daytime performances at 5:30 pm,
featuring over $4,500 in scholarships and encore performances by some of
the top bands in the festival. It will be directly followed by the Closing
Concert at 7 pm, featuring guest trombonist Scott Whitfield, 2010
Sacramento Jazz Festival & Jubilee Emperor, clarinetist Bob Draga, and the
Clinicians All-Star Band.
Festival admission prices ($10 in advance, $12 at the door for
adults and *no charge for students age 21 and under with school IDs*) also
cover the evening concert. There will be free, event parking in parking
structure 1, adjacent to Capistrano Hall. For more information visit:
www.sacjazz.org/youthfestival/ or email youthbandfest at sacjazz.org. Those
buying tickets will be eligible for prizes in a drawing. Tickets may be
