Rust was right and Bill Haesler sums the situation up perfectly. And if you
haven't heard Wild Bill as the "get off" man with the Benny Merof orchestra
you ain't lived.

Dear Brian,
Exactly.
Which is why, many moons ago the term "Hot Dance" (attributed to Brian Rust)
was invented.
It describes perfectly a hot Bix solo leaping out of a Paul Whiteman record.
Young Louis Armstrong soaring above the Fletcher Henderson Orchestra in
1924.
Early Bunny Berigan with the Fred Rich band.
Wild Bill Davison and the Benny Meroff Orch, Freddy Keppard with Doc Cook's
Dreamland Orchestra.
My collection is full of wonderful examples of jazzmen earning a living.
A whole genre of 1920s jazz-related musical hotness many people overlook
because "it isn't jazz".
But then, you already know that you old stirrer.

Very kind regards,
Bill.
