Just back from the Evan Christopher show in the Zappa club in Herzlia.
Unlike last time, when he had to play with a band which didn't even
know such standards as St. James Infirmary, this time he is
accompanied by Swing de Gitanes which suits him to a tee. The usually
noisy drummer Shai Selman showed that, when needed, he can play soft -
he was only loud in his solos, which is as it should be.
The place was full almost to capacity. It is also a restaurant, but
food and drinks can only be ordered until half an hour before music
starts. What a wonderful policy!
The show itself was very good. The repertoire consisted mainly of
less well know Sidney Bechet compositions and the music of the Hot
Club de France. The only standards were "What Is This Thing Called
Love" and Bechet's "Petit Fleur." SdG had one number to itself, and
it was great. Both Yaakov Hoter (the leader) and Oren Sagy (double
bass) played great solos throughout, Oren sounding like a very low key
guitar.
Going again on Thursday, to hear them in a more formal setting at the
Tel-Aviv Museum, and probably on Friday as well - it's well worth it!
Cheers
