Hello Gary,
I am recommending to you a wonderful book "Such A Melodious Racket" the
lost history of jazz in Canada. Author Mark Miller, Publisher Mercury
Press. About a couple of years ago after I had just read the book I
submitted a review of it to DJML and you can probably locate it if you
search for my name in the Archives. The reason for the recommendation will
be clear if you read on.

Chapter 1 starts off with these words "The history of jazz in Canada begins
in Winnipeg on a Monday afternoon in1914". Now I have your interest!

"Sometime after 2.30pm on September 21st, 6 black musicians took to the
stage of the Pantages Theatre...........reviewed in the Winnipeg Tribune the
following day." The band was not one trying to establish itself as it was no
less than the New Orleans Creole Ragtime Band, better known as the Original
Creole Orchestra and led by Freddy Keppard and included Edward Vincent, tbn.
George Baquet, clt .Bill Johnson ,bs. Dink Johnson dms. Jimmy Palao vln.
And Norwood Williams gtr.

The Winnipeg Jazz Babies were born in the Spring of 1919 and made their
initial appearances in MAY 1919 at the Strand and Orpheum theatres and then
began to play for dances at the Alhambra and Manitoba Halls. I could go on
for a long time quoting the story of early jazz in Canada but you must
really obtain the book. It was originally recommended to me when I was
trying to find out more about Morton's time in Vancouver and I'm sure that
you would get many hours of pleasure reading about the early days, 1914 to
1949, in Canada.

Cheers, Glen Page, Surrey, B.C.
