When jazz was the popular music of the country, men wore hats outdoors; in 
the summer, straw hats, at least in warm climates. Look at pictures from the 
time to verify this. If they could get seersucker suits to go with the hats, 
it would be awesome.

My student band has worn very nice expensive ($100 each made in Italy) straw
hats at their performances for many years. We've been criticized at certain
jazz festivals for it, but the students love to wear them.
