Ella Fitzgerald: The Voice of Jazz (Verve/Universal)
by Ben Rayner
Toronto Star, December 21, 2013
The thorough, 96-page bio-book included with "The Voice of Jazz" asserts off the
top that the late Ella Fitzgerald was "simply the best woman that sang jazz or any
other kind of music," and after putting in the many hours of study required to digest
this box set's 10 -- yep, 10 -- CDs and more than 200 songs, you'll probably be inclined
to agree. There's a lot of loveliness to be found in the Ella catalogue, and it's
represented here all the way from the first recordings of "I'll Chase the Blues Away"
and "Love and Kisses" she made with the Chick Webb band at just 18 in 1935 to the
title track to her final studio album, "All That Jazz," recorded seven years before
Fitzgerald's passing at 79 in 1989. A lot of bang for your $85.
