Last time I stayed at the Monteleone, on Royal which was great. The Carousel historical lobby bar has music every evening. I sat in a set for Steamboat Willie, across from the Royal Sonesta in Musician's Heritage Park, and a set with Loose Change at Maison Bourbon. What a great experience. I will be back in late Jan or early Feb and hope to repeat. I play kinda loud and Maison Bourbon is certainly the place for that.

Totally agree with Ron! There are also new clubs developing in By-Water and Marigney - those areas are getting much safer for tourists now.
(Although you should always be cautious in NOLA...) When you are on Frenchmen, eat at Praline Connection for the best "soul food" in the city. There are several free newspapers around that have full music listings, and you can also get info on-line at http://offbeat.com http://www.wwoz.org/new-orleans-community/music-calendar and http://frenchmenstreetlive.com/
