You are right, he did them as well. One great example is the Cristal Ballroom, 1940 that was recorded.
I feel however that HIS music, and then take as an example his Cotton Club days, also served other purposes.
I would suggest the so-called Jungle style pieces, like The Mooche, or Creole Rhapsody. They seem to have served other purposes than dancing.

I don't know how many dances Ellington played in the days of old, although I assume that on tours it was mostly dances. However, there are Ellington recordings from various dances in the 1950's and 1960's.

Compared to Henderson Duke Ellington usually was doing less dance orientated music, although they also had to accompany dance acts in between show music. Later of course they did mainly concerts where the audience was just sitting to listen to the music.
