Dear Robert,
With this issue of our Hand Dodger we begin a series of brief bios introducing you
to each member of the Black Eagles. Some of you have already met, listened to, and
gotten to know our guys, but many others of you may be interested in learning, as
our friend Lew Shaw puts it, "a few details about how the members got their musical
start and what they do when they're not on the bandstand."
First up is our pianist and resident psychologist Bob Pilsbury. Bob has been with
the band
Bob Pilsbury
since its inception in 1971, and after 40 years he's still going strong. As a student
in Newton (MA) High School and at Dartmouth College in Hanover NH, Bob played not
just piano but clarinet and sax. During WWII Bob led a 58-member Army marching band
in the Philippines. Returning to the States, Bob studied classical piano at the New
England Conservatory in Boston. In the 1950s he was intermission pianist at Jimmy
Ryan's in New York City, and occasionally sat in with such greats as Willie "The
Lion" Smith at Stuyvesant Casino. Back again in Boston, Bob had a long stint with
the Excalibur Jazz Band. Resuming his academic work at Harvard, he soon earned an
EDM degree in Psychology. Today Bob continues in private practice working with individuals
and families.
Bob has a great natural musical ability and he especially prides himself on having
perfect pitch. In addition to his unique and powerful two-handed piano playing, Bob
is recognized for his seductive vocal style.
April Gigs
Monthly "Second Thursday" Gig
- The Black Eagles continue our monthly "Second Thursday" sessions at the Sherborn
Inn, in Sherborn, MA. So mark
Thursday, April 11
on your calendar. And while you're at it, circle every Second Thursday every month
for the rest of this year.
Good food, great atmosphere, and the world's best traditional jazz band... It makes
for a very special evening!
The music starts at 7pm.
Special Jazz Luncheon - Wednesday, April 24
, 12 Noon to 2 pm, at the Sherborn Inn. These occasional mid-day affairs have become
very popular. Book early.
The Inn, one of the coziest spots in New England, is on Main Street in Sherborn just
minutes from the Mass Pike and I-495, easily accessable from the Boston suburbs,
Providence, Worcester and Nashua. For directions and luncheon, dinner and/or room
reservations, give Phil Cocco a call at 1-800-552-9742 or
visit their website
.
Big Concert - Saturday, April 27
, 7:30 pm, Methuen Music Hall, 192 Broadway (route 28), Methuen, MA 01844. And we're
talkin' BIG. The Music Hall was designed and built in the 1800s to house the second
largest pipe organ in the U.S., which was then brought piece by monumental piece
from Boston and re-constructed in this magnificent hall. You've got to see the inside
and hear the acoustics of this beautiful building. The Black Eagles are looking forward
to a return performance, and if we and our audience are as lucky as last year we
may also enjoy a short - but BIG - tune from that beast of an organ. It's open seating,
so get there early.

We'll be looking for you!!

Limited Edition CDs
The NBEJB selection of LP reissues on CD - The Limited Edition CDs - are taken from
original master tapes and feature additional tracks that would not fit on an LP at
the time we produced them.
The project had its start when
NBEJB Fantasies
the company that had been producing our cassettes closed down. An unexpected bonus
was that they sent us digital masters on CD for all the cassettes. From these CD
masters we were able to produce the Limited Edition CD set. We have added some recordings
that were only available as cassettes, and one or two that were ignored at the time.
'Fantasies', the thirteenth CD, and 'On The Road', the fourteenth and last CD, are
now available. These last two CDs complete the set of 14. (The LECD series CDs are
currently mixed in with all our CDs, but will soon be listed separately for ease
of ordering.)
