Here's a Kids Post from Washington Post about origins of jazz.  I send the
link because there's a photo of Ellington statue/artwork just outside the
Howard Theatre in DC.  There are also a couple of other links.  Since it's
written for kids, should be at a reading level acceptable for most of our
listmates (smile)
