Ginny and Bob,
You can look up yourself what they say about their own prizes. Go to their
home page, click the English menu then click on the link "Prizes, Honours":
http://www.benko-dixie.hu
As far as I know, some of the prizes listed are fake or half-true, including
the Sacramento award. There are three California-related awards they claim:
Sacramento Jazz Jubilee, California, Grand Prize - 1982
"International Jazz Band of the Year", California, USA - 1983
Award (Resolution No.1866/82) by the California State Assembly, USA -1982
But they are still popular, Sandor Benko has been running the band for 55
years now and he is pretty good at finding great new members who certainly
have better musical quality than most of the old folks they used to have.

OMG! Not only dishonest. Also short-sighted as to how much fakery one
can get by with. Of course, I guess it worked with many general audiences.

I am not thrilled with the
Benko Band. Some years ago they appeared at the Sacramento Jazz Jubilee.
They went home to Hungary, claimed they won or were voted the best band at
the festival, either made up a fake certificate or trophy and used the
false statement in their advertizement.
Salesmanship in this business is good, but this is a bit over-board...
