In addition to Dave's excellent advice, I'd like to add that many systems
will support passwords longer than 8 characters. The longer your password
is, the harder it is to break using brute force methods. One approach is to
use a phrase you will remember. It may contain plain English words, but
there should be several of them. Per Dave's advice, draw from the full
range of characters (numerals, punctuation) and avoid obvious identifiers
(like "djml" or part of your name).

We often read about systems being compromised, so it would be wise to alter
your passphrase somehow on every system. This is still easier than
recovering from identity theft.
