Listmates,

With all the talk about teaching the youth about Classic Jazz, below is just one of many programs that the STJS (Sacramento Traditional Jazz Society) sponsors.

Experience and learn about different styles of traditional jazz in three performance venues in Capistrano Hall on Saturday, February 11th at the Trad Jazz Youth Band Festival (TJYBF). This event is cosponsored by Sac State Jazz Studies and the Sacramento Traditional Jazz Society. 30 elementary, middle school, high school and college jazz ensembles will perform from 8:00am-5:00pm before a live audience and adjudicators in this scholastic jazz festival. According to Jazz Studies director Steve Roach, “It is important that our young musicians are taught how to play jazz while enjoying the learning process through every means available.” He looks forward to welcoming all the directors and student musicians to the campus to perform for the festival’s distinguished line-up of professional jazz adjudicators, clinicians and performers. Following each band’s performance, the musicians remain onstage for live feedback. The clinicians will use microphones so that the audience, too, can learn from their comments along with the band.

The general public is invited to view mentored jam sessions for students in the new Tailgate Room and Lead Sheet Clinics that run throughout the day upstairs. At noon, there will be clinician-led jam sessions with students and band directors in Room 143. At 3:10 pm, festival clinicians Bob Draga, Eddie Erickson and fellow clinicians will share their secrets in the ever popular jazz workshop on the development of stage presence utilizing the “E”-Factor: how to Excite, Energize, and Engage your audience.” The Showcase and Awards Ceremony will conclude the daytime performances at 5:30 pm, featuring over $4,000 in festival scholarships and encore performances by some of the top bands in the festival. A special inaugural Jazz Education Award by the STJS Foundation will be presented onstage to a Davis music teacher (to be a surprise!) around 5:15 pm. It will be directly followed by the Closing Concert from 7-8:30 pm, featuring 2010 Sacramento Jazz Festival & Jubilee Emperor, clarinetist Bob Draga, and the Clinicians All-Star Band.

Festival admission prices ($10 in advance, $12 at the door for adults and no charge for students age 21 and under with school IDs) also cover the evening concert. There will be free, event parking in parking structure 1 adjacent to Capistrano Hall. For more information visit: www.sacjazz.org/youthfestival/ or email youthbandfest at sacjazz.org

Those buying tickets in advance of the festival will be eligible for prizes in a drawing. Tickets may be ordered from the Sacramento Traditional Jazz Society (916-372-5277) or Helen Robinson (916-947-2857).
