The Bastards are putting OKOM Bands and recording artists out of business.
But there is way to beat them at their own greedy game :
Sort of like sharing Sheet music for free as is done all the time on this list :))
I seriously doubt there is any employee at ASCAP or BMI old enough to even remember the authors of most songs from the 1920's era. and if there is he can't move fast enough to catch you anyway, even with a high speed wheelchair or scooter. :))
There are Cd and cassette, duplicating systems available from the same folks who manufacture your cds
like : www.discmakers.com Buy one to suit your needs and the blank recordable Cds, cassettes, and whatever other supplies you need
and make your own at home and sell them on your gigs. Or just use them as business cards to secure gigs and promote YKOM and your band.
Ignore ASCAP and BMI just like they ignore you and most of the authors that wrote the music you play anyway. If you are giving them away as promotional materials they will have Hell to Pay and lots of expenses to try and prosecute you for copyright infringement since you have no commercial purpose in actually selling copies of it. And slight chance of getting any money from a Dixieland Band. They would die laughing at themselves in court before that would happen.
Cheers, and Jeers,
Bart.

Subject: [Dixielandjazz] Songs Free of Royalties - USA Copyright Law
The USA Copyright Law was revised in 1998 by the "Sony Bono Copyright
Term Extension Act. Under that revision, here is a summary OF CURRENT
USA COPYRIGHT LAW:
1) ALL songs registered before 1/1/1923 were protected for 75 years
and are now in Public Domain.
2) Songs registered between 1/1/23 and 1/1/1978 are protected for 95
years from copyright date. For these songs, the EARLIEST possible date
of their becoming Public Domain is 2019. (Because protection runs
through the END of the calendar year in which they expire and a 1/1/23
copyright would expire on 1/1/48, but would still e protected until
December 31, 2048 and thus become PD on 1/1/2049)
3) Songs created after 1/1/ 78 are protected for 70 years after the
death of the author, or last surviving author. For these songs, the
EARLIEST possible date of their becoming Public Domain is 2048.
If anyone wants to see the Legal Jargon surrounding the above summary,
