Hi Marek,
I was lucky to be around at the right time. I learned so much from the
Americans - space, time, economy. Art Hodes was a sheer joy. He just
oozed the blues. I'd heard the Blue Notes with Art, Bill and Bechet,
(most were Art's sessions) so it was a very odd feeling to be in their
company, let alone on the road with them.

I did a number of dates with Kenny Davern, mainly in trio format and on
one occasion at Eastbourne with Art. It was recorded, but when held up
against the wonderful trio session they did with Don De Michael and
another with Colin Bowden, it is not as good.

I did an album with Yank Lawson, who was 74 years old at the time, but
still playing like he did on the Crosby records. And then there was Al
Casey - who stayed at my house for about a week. Another player soaked
in the blues.
Sadly they've all left the building and I feel sorry for younger players
who never experienced it at first hand. I'm envious of people like Mike
Pointon, Sammy Rimington, Colin Bowden Cuff Billett etc, who worked with
the likes of George Lewis, Cap'n John Handy, Albert Nicholas and all
those New Orleans players who had gone by the time I arrived on the scene.
Keep swinging,
John
