Louis Armstrong: The Armstrong Box (Storyville)
by Jack Massarik
London Evening Standard, January 6, 2012
Bargain-hunters hitting town with gift vouchers this weekend could do much worse
than this deluxe boxed set by jazz's first and possibly greatest star. Younger readers
who recall Louis Armstrong as a gravel-voiced pop singer never knew the masterly
trumpeter and showman who spread happiness all around the world. Even back in banjo-driven
New Orleans his funky, push-pull way of phrasing was decades ahead of its time. Recorded
live, these seven CDs cover his 1947-67 prime, onstage in Europe and the US with
great bands including pianist Earl Hines, clarinettist Edmond Hall and trombonists
Jack Teagarden, Tyree Glenn or Trummy Young. A bonus DVD also captures his mildly
anarchic moments on US TV with fellow trumpeter Dizzy Gillespie and pianist-composer
Hoagy Carmichael. Irreplaceable.
