Hello,
Today was the Mardi Gras, and the evening of the bi-weekly New Orleans
Function (albeit truncated) gig at the Shafa Bar in old Jaffa.
Truncated, because it's a quartet job, often featuring musicians who
are not regular members of NOF. A fortnight ago they had a pianist -
sorry I missed it, but I couldn't go - too much work, Tonight it was
Eli Preminger - tpt, Yoav Kolumbus - bass, Shimi Gilad- Banjo and
guest artist Jacques Sany on soprano sax.
The band members are young (Shimi has twins less than one year old,
and they are hist firstborn). Jacques is an octogenarian and has been
playing for more years than he probably cares to remember. I have
already mentioned them all on this list.
The numbers were standard, the least overplayed one being "The Girl of
My Dreams." But jazz isn't what, it is how. And the "how" was
fantastic! It's been a long time since I last enjoyed a performance
as much as tonight. The band is always good, but playing with the
master seemed to have inspired the others, and it was great. To play
in Shafa, te band should learn "Bass Ale Blues," as Shafa is one of
the few places where Bass Ale is served draft.
Unfortunately, a not-too-sober gentleman asked to sit in on piano.
Which would have been all right if he could play. But, at least, he
wasn't very audible, so he didn't do too much harm. That was the only
thing that marred the otherwise wonderful performance. I am looking
forward to more.
This time, a few people I know came. One said that he was there
thanks to me - my friend and I met him there four weeks ago. I don't
usually start conversations with people, but that gentleman was
wearing a New Orleans Jazz Club of Northern California sweatshirt, so
I took his email and informed him about the evening. And there was a
member of our jazz group with his wife
Cheers
