It's just a bad habit and no more. I've seen extremely advanced pros  
do it.
Trombonists, like violinists, have to listen and develop
that feel for the right pitch.

They feel for the Ab overtone series because that's where the bell is.
  So, if the bell was nearer, they'd be feeling for 2nd position.
It's a little touch of security.

  When we start playing really fast, it's time to get the fingers out  
of the way.
