[Dixielandjazz] Dixielandjazz Digest, Vol 120, Issue 39

Dear Bob,
What a shame the former Sacramento Dixieland Jubilee festival has gone the way of most festivals around the world and become a ``music festival ``----- no doubt,to survive at all.
Having played the 1987,1988 and 1991festivals with the Vintage Jazzband from Auckland,New Zealand and been part of a festival that presented over 100 bands,20 odd from outside the USA,just about all in the traditional jazz idiom,it is rather sad to me that next year they are going to pay tribute to the festivals` roots by featuring a dixieland band ! I just guess ``necessity must``.
By the way , we all had a fantastic time in Sacramento, the hospitality and kindness of everyone associated with the festival as well as all the musicians we met from all over the world, was mind boggling. The organisation was par excellence --- and to think we got to play with the likes of Wild Bill Davison, Don Goldie, Ernie Carsons (later to visit and play and stay with us in Auckland )and Tommy Saunders as well as hob nobbing with amongst others George Probert was incredible.Meeting up with old friends I had met in New Orleans in 1971 like Don Knies and Ron Going and his wife Jan was another huge plus.
Ah - give me the good old days anytime !
To finish on a positive note - good luck to the Sacramento Music festival and its organisers and may they find more and more room for more and more dixieland bands in the future.
Lindsay Meech.
