You should absolutely not miss the Philadelphia New Year's Day Mummers Parade. It's an all-day affair that travels up south Broad Street to City Hall, where the judging takes place. There are several divisions (the Comics, the Fancies, the Brigades, etc.) but the division you will probably enjoy the most is the String Bands. They are comprised of banjos, saxophones, string basses, accordions and some percussion. The very fancy costumes hint of Mardi Gras and there's plenty of choreography, scenery and props as well. There's no other parade like it in the USA, so far as I know. There is plenty of information about the bands and the parade online.

Here are a few videos of last year's parade to give you a taste. Watch them full screen if you can:

See you on Broad Street!
Cheers,

Shalom Jazz Fans,

I have been quiet for a long time on DJML, but lurking. Lots of work and other things going on with us here in Israel, mostly good. My Doctor Jazz Dixieland Band has been performing in Jerusalem and around the center part of the country. We're in the Israel Museum the next 2 Thursday nights, from 9PM to 1AM -- free admission to the museum and the show as part of the city of Jerusalem's winter cultural festival. Now if that isn't worth a visit ...

I am also doing a tribute show to Louis Armstrong on cornet, trumpet and vocals, as the opening act for my partner Yisrael Lutnick, the Broadway Rabbi, who does his own tribute show, "Frankly, Sinatra". Now appearing in various places in the Jerusalem and Tel Aviv areas. A fun evening of story and song honoring 2 of the great entertainers of the 20th century.

Not last, and not least, I am building the set for the first production of "Evita" in English in Israel. The show will run in January and February throughout the country.

My wife Krina and I will be coming to the US in about 2 weeks. If anyone has anything going on, please let us know about it. Our itinerary is:

Ft Lauderdale, FL Dec 13 to 17
LA, CA Dec 18 to 30
Philadelphia Dec 31 to Jan 5

We'll be with Katie and CJ at Curley's on Wed eve Dec 19, 5:30 to 7:30PM.

I will have my solo CD "Blowing My Own Horn", and my band's latest CD, released earlier this year, "Doctor Jazz' Happy Hour", for sale ... still only $15.

Will be happy to see, hear, and jam with our jazz friends -- whatever we can fit into our schedule.

Anyone who is considering coming to Israel, you are welcome. Krina is a licensed tour guide. And I usually manage to find opportunities for visiting players to do their stuff -- not for money, but for fame and a memorable experience. It is safe to visit and tour here, and an unforgettable journey.

Happy Hanukkah, Merry Christmas, and a healthy and prosperous New Year!
