I’m indebted to Jim Kashishian for his explanation of Mr Collier’s usage of
English:

> It sounds, Eric, like what you read on the back of some bottles of wine,
> referring to all the tastes & feelings you should be receiving while
> knocking back the red stuff! 'A dark, woody, downward plunge.'

Ah. Now I understand!

And many thanks to Stephen G. Barbone for describing Mr J.L.C. as:

> He is a wonderful amateur OKOM trombonist having developed a love for jazz
> at Hamilton College which featured Jazz Band concerts from the mid 1940s
> through the 1960s.

And therein lies the truth I think.

It’s quite probable that he had no serious musical training, and thus couldn’t
read the written music to distinguish triplets from running quavers.

I certainly have no problems with amateur musicians as such, and have worked
with many such people during my career. Some of them were quite gifted
players.

But I don’t recall any of them writing books full of twenty five dollar
words.
