Hello lisatmates,
I have just received the writeup on the Atelier Jazz Festiwal (sic-
that's the Polish spelling) in Gniezno, Poland. The MC, Jan "Ptaszyn"
Wroblewski (pronounced Yan Ptashyn Vrooblevsky) introduced the OKOM
portion of the festival - the Dixie Company from Poznan - saying that
Dixieland bands are rarer and rarer, and that, even at traditional
jazz fesivals, he encounters more "blues" bands than traditional jazz
bands. Wroblewski himself is a tenor saxophone player; in the
mid-fifties he represented Poland in an international youth jazz band
put together by Marshall Brown to participate in the Newport Jazz
Festival. One participant, Dusko Goykovitch, became internationally
known. Wroblewski has continued playing all these years; albeit
originally a modernist, he often plays with traditional bands, and
shows great understanding of the style.
Cheers
