RAY SKJELBRED & His Cubs
Sun., Sept. 11, 2011 · Noon-5pm · Dante Club
2330 Fair Oaks Blvd. · Sacramento, CA 95825

Ray Skjelbred & His Cubs play hot Chicago jazz mixed with New Orleans influences, early swing, and plenty of blues. Each musician in this five-piece group is notable in the current traditional jazz scene, with many years of playing experience enhanced by a strong historic understanding of the music. Their recent CD on Jazzology, Greetings From Chicago, has been highly praised by critics, fans and festival directors alike. The International Association of Jazz Record Collectors Journal said, "For small group Chicago-style, it doesn't get any better than this." Ray Skjelbred, piano; Kim Cusack, clarinet; Katie Cavera, guitar; Clint Baker, bass; Hal Smith, drums.

- THANK YOU to Rae Ann Hopkins Berry from San Francisco for sponsoring Ray Skjelbred & His Cubs!

- DANCERS: The Dante Club has installed a beautiful hardwood dance floor. Much of it was covered with chairs last month, but this month, we're opening it up and nearly doubling the dance space. If enough dancers come out, we'll do it again next month.

Opening at noon: Crazy Eights youth band.

Sacramento Music Festival:
The Sac. Jazz Fest. & Jubilee has a new name

The official name change to the "Sacramento Music Festival" more accurately reflects how the event has evolved over the years into a festival featuring many musical styles in addition to jazz: Blues, Rock 'n' Roll, Western Swing, Rhythm & Blues, Zydeco, Latin, and Bluegrass. TNT Auditions on Sept. 12:

AUDITIONS for 2011-2012 TNT youth band
Monday, Sept. 12, 2011 · 6:30pm · STJS Office
2787 Del Monte Street · West Sacramento, CA 95691

TNT (The New Traditionalsits) is the STJS-sponsored honor band for local high school musicians. They play traditional jazz at various events. Perhaps you've heard them at the Rent Party in January, at the Parade of Bands in July, or at our Festival in May. This year's band also performed monthly at Round Table Pizza where student musicians in the area were encouraged to come up and jam with the band.

Annual auditions for the TNT band take place at the start of the school year. Who is eligible? High School students in the greater Sacramento area, including Davis, Woodland, Elk Grove, Roseville, Rocklin, and other cities surrounding Sacramento. Rehearsals are once a week, and take place at the STJS Office in West Sacramento.
See flyer for more info: http://sacjazz.org/pdf/TNTAuditions.pdf

Congratulations to Bob Williams, recently selected as the new TNT Director. Former TNT Director Nahum Zdybel is moving to Southern California to further his education, and we wish him all the best.
