I've just received this E-mail from Patrice Champarou:

"Hello, Bob - or rather, if you like, the Dixielandjazz group C/O Bob Smith

I have had to stay away from this job for a short while, and will resume
soon.
As a mere parenthesis, mp3's did exist at the time Scott started his
website, but the compression used to result in such a poor sound that
realaudio was, I think, a better choice - at a time most of us used to
connect with these noisy 56k modems and even, in some countries, pay
according to the time spent online.

That said, your careful investigations - which confirm my own results while
looking back at the files I managed to "grab" from the RHJ Archives - do not
allow me to see any "logics" in the observation of the removed, or vanished
files. They may have been moved, or corrupted, and still exist somewhere on
the unattended server. If the extensive incident was linked to copyright
reasons (and Scott was indeed concerned with these, he declined my offer
regarding the 1947 recordings of Django and the ATC Band after I had filled
in the page), I do not see any reason why the All Star Trio thoroughly
vanished - their recordings are not only public domain, but also available
from several websites, from archive.org to the Library of Congress
"jukebox", and also the great Victor discography by the University of
Califormia.

I will try to find the address of this group later on because, although I
really do not have time just now, I am also interested in technical problems
encountered by users of different systems and software - but one thing is
100% sure : the 404 error has nothing to do with anyone's configuration, it
is a faithful reply sent by the server to the request of a non-existing page
or file, or the indication of a faulty link.

Best regards,

Patrice"

Regards

Bob Smith
