An "ophicleide" is a member of a family of keyed bugles (flapped holes in
the side like a saxophone). It was a mid-19th century attempt to make a
chromatic brass instrument. They came in several sizes, had conical bores,
and the medium large ones look a little like a conical bore bassoon with a
trumpet mouthpiece.
