Ophicleide is a brass instrument, with brass mouthpiece, but often keys like 
a sax or bassoon - early to mid  1800's. Symphony tuba players know the 
parts for Mendelssohn, and some Berlioz, as well as some Wagner.
Some call it the "bass version of a keyed bugle".
I've never played the instrument, but the parts in an orchestra.
