The surprise bass line was actually Vic Berton on kettle drums.  His brother
Ralph wrote a fascinating biography of Bix that include a lot of information
of Bix and Red and other Chicago musicians.  It's worth a trip to the
library to check out.  Or you can buy my first edition copy of Remembering
