Dear DJML 600:
Riverwalk Jazz this week features Harry Allen, Allan Vaché and Ron
Hockett, a triumvirate who put out a plethora of plenty reed-blowin'
rompin and stompin. The subject is the riff-based music of Charlie
Christian as a member of the Benny Goodman Sextet of 1939-41.
Tragically, Christian died on March 2, 1942 at the age of twenty-five
of tuberculosis.
Christian was the first famous electric guitarist in jazz and helped
to create the new bebop style, especially with his jam session work at
Minton's Playhouse in the early '40s, the "cradle of bebop." To modern
ears, this early bebop style sounds more like an extension of swing
than the bebop-derived music that came later.
I'll be posting on our Facebook page all this week about classic
Christian/Goodman sides found on YouTube, as well as more resources
available about Christian on Twitter. Follow us on Twitter

Some of you may remember the great tenor man Jerry Jerome who played
with many big bands including Goodman and the original Glenn Miller
Orchestra. I knew Jerry and worked for him in the '80s. Here are
Charlie Christian & Jerry Jerome, "Tea for Two" 1939.
