Urban Dictionary Definitions
The Urban Diction was founded by a California Polytechnic student
circa 1999. It is a "peoples" dictionary whereby interested people
submit words and their definitions. To date there are about 11 million
definitions on it.
If one is interested in finding out how to submit definitions, and
what the criteria are, a google search for <Urban Dictionary
Wikipedia> will tell you all you want to know.
The vast majority of people who visit the Urban Dictionary site, and/
or contribute to it, are under the age of 35. Perhaps that explains
the difference in how some of us oldsters define "muso" vs. how the
kids do. In that regard, it is a window into how the younger
generations think. The dictionary is fun to use and in many instances,
simply a form of satirical comment. Sometimes tongue in cheek. And
sometimes downright nasty.
Example of the latter being the urban dictionary definition of
Santorum. (Only the brave should look it up)
It was put their by a disaffected voter. Rick Santorum is an ultra
right wing homophobic politician, former US Senstor who was voted out
of office in Pennsylvania but is now running for the Presidential
nomination. Obviously the person who posted the definition does not
care for Mr. Santorum.
There are numerous definitions for words like "Jazz" and variations.
Check them all out if you wish. Some are very funny and others are
misconceptions but this is how the young define jazz.
Regarding the various "muso" definitions, this is also how the kids
define it today. Easy for them, difficult for us. Here in
Philadelphia, among us old folks, muso is simply short form for
musician. The Urban Dictionary site is:
