Featured at SPDJ’s 50th Anniversary Party
By Dick Craven
Two Feature bands, a Guest Artist, and refreshments will mark The Society For The Preservation OfDixieland Jazz’s Fiftieth Anniversary Party attheirregular Fourth Sunday meeting, October 23,inthe Covina Bowl’s Pyramid Room. To help make the afternoon a success, members of The South Bay Jazz Club of Southern California are invited to join in the festivities at SPDJ member prices, $7 a person.
Music will begin at 12:45, with the Royale Garden playing an
hour-long set at 1:45 and The Night BloomingJazzmen starting their set at 3 p.m.
Musicians are invited to bring their instrumentsand sign-in with MusicDirector
Connie St. Jean, who will put together jamsets to open the celebration at12:45 and
to play after the two feature bands.
SPDJ, the second oldest trad jazz club west of the Mississippi, heldits first
meetingon October 27, 1961, and has been meetingon the fourth Sunday of
each month since then. The Southern California Hot Jazz Society, the oldest
jazz club in the area, has been meeting since 1949.
The South Bay New Orleans Jazz Club held its firstmeeting in 1962,
NOJCSC followed in 1968, and Jazz Forum in 1977.
Originally, SPDJ featuredonly jam sessions; feature bands were to come later.
But to help celebrate SPDJ’s Fiftieth, The Night Blooming Jazzmen and the
Royale Garden Dixieland Jazz Band will be featured, along with Jazz All-Star
George Probert, who will sit-in with the twofeature bands. The Nightbloomers,
organized in 1974 to represent SPDJ at the Third Annual Sacramento Dixieland
Jubilee, were truly representative of SPDJ since all were members and/or officers
of the club. Royale Garden was formed by co-musicdirectors Alan Shelton and
John Sobott from SPDJ members, and, like the Night BloomingJazzmen were
declared an officialSPDJ Representative Band by the SPDJ Board OfDirectors.
The Pyramid Room has a large, newly-installed dance floor, and full bar service
and a snack bar are available. Complimentary coffee, cake, cookies, candies,
brownies, etc. will be served by SPDJ members, coordinated by Marian Warren
and Sally Shell.
