Trivial detail: When visiting the San Marino early music festival,  
complete with drummers, heraldic trumpets, hautboie, fagotto,  
sackbutts, flagtwirlers and armed crossbowmen, I heard from good  
authority that the snare was added to front line military drums during  
the renaissance because the "sizzle" tended to spook the opponent's  
cavalry horses. It is too bad they didn't know to attack with an  
incessant ride cymbal as well.
