Yes Louis, you are thinking correctly, I have been following this thread about Sacramento, as the Older Audience keeps getting older and yes unfortunately dying off, or moving into care homes , hospitals etc, or simply immobile and cannot go out anymore. the audience is certainly diminishing. And why is this so ?? because so many Festival organizations long ago thought their little game would never end and their fans would always be available to support them and the festivals. Life goes on and embraces New Life Forms and customs, especially when the younger ones have never been exposed to the experiences and joys of the older generations particularly in music.

Does anyone really believe that the Ford Motor Car would still be in business and selling Fords today if they had not continued to advertise and promote their vehicles to new and younger audiences consistently ? Or any other successful business that has endured decades of ups and downs and consumer Fads.?

The promotion business and sponsorship business is all a numbers game, figure out how to pull the numbers and keep the numbers and you can stay in business, fail and the sponsors run with their money to other events that show them the numbers they are looking for for return on investment.

Example: If your major sponsor for your festival has been a Condom manufacturer for thirty years and they suddenly look at their sponsorships and see that they are throwing thousands of dollars in sponsorship to a market that is well past the birthing age for children and no longer need their product why should they continue to fund the event. The festival would be much better off looking to switch their Condom sponsor to a Viagra Sponsor or even Depends, Preparation H, Dr. Schools shoe inserts, Support Hose, Denture Creams, Medical Insurance firms, Funeral Homes, or any other company marketing to an older generation. Of course keep all the Beer and Alcohol sponsors because there is no slacking off on their products just because of age. :))

It's all about getting those expendable sums of cash and how many folks will spend their money to get them.

Bart.

Does this have a familiar ring? I'm thinking of Sacramento. The Bude
attendances more than halved. You can't blame the Royal Jubilee and the
Olympics. for next year being cancelled - the dates don't clash at all.

best

Louis
