I don't know what that little mute is called, but the double mute style
with plunger was invented by Tricky Sam Nanton for the Ellington band in
the 20s.
In one of the short films the Ellington band made in the 40s Nanton
solos just using the plunger with no mute inside the bell, But the
double mute sound
comes out. So one can tell it's one of the early examples of miming!
Incidentally Quentin Jackson was the third great exponent of Nanton's original style.
