"The Smithsonian Collection of Classic Jazz."
It consisted of six vinyl LPs that explored and summarized the history of
jazz and
was later released on compact disc. It was the first comprehensive
collection of
its kind and immediately became part of the jazz curriculum at colleges
throughout
the country. "

About 60 years ago RCA Victor put put out an "Encyclopedia of Recorded Jazz"
on 12 x 10" LPs. It was of course restricted to RCA artists, but it was up
to date for its time and apparently of much greater worth than the
Smithsonian set.

Best wishes
