Today is Bix Beiderbecke's birthday. Happy 108th, Bix! Bix made his first record on February 18, 1924 and his last record on September 15, 1930. Perhaps no other jazz artists so revolutioned the art or influenced so many people in so tragically short a time. Avoid tonight's bad weather and treacherous NY-NJ area roads and come celebrate with the South Sore Syncopators on Monday night at the Bickford's Big Bix Beiderbecke Birthday Bash in Morristown, NJ.

The South Shore Syncopators are a Vintage Dance Orchestra in the manner of the San Francisco Starlight Orchestra or Dean Moura. In addition to their ten instrumentalists, they carry a compliment of five vocalists - three women, a tenor or "boy vocalist" and a baritone, or "crooner." This affords them the luxury of doing ensemble numbers drawn from the repertoire of the Boswell Sisters, the Rhythm Boys, the Keller Sisters & Lynch, the Three Keys and others. They play exclusively from printed material from the 1920s and 30s or from meticulously-written transcriptions taken down from historic 78rpm recordings.

The Syncopators have chosen a diverse program of music associated with Bix Beiderbecke, his colleagues and other bands and performers of his time. Of course, you will hear such Beiderbecke favorites as the Paul Whiteman version of “From Monday On,” the Jean Goldkette version of “Proud of a Baby Like You,” but you will also hear music by bands that Bix came into contact with on the road, like the great Fletcher Henderson Orchestra, the Coon-Sanders Nighthawks, the Missourians and others. In addition the Syncopators have added some new vocal numbers to their repertoire expressly for this appearance. You’ll hear The Rhythm Boys’ version of “The Bluebirds and the Blackbirds Got Together,” transcribed from the soundtrack of the Paul Whiteman movie, “The King of Jazz,” and favorites by Bing Crosby, Marion Harris and others.

Tickets are priced at $15 each and $18 at the door. The show begins at 8:00pm and runs 90 minutes, allowing you to get home at a reasonable hour for a weeknight. The Bickford Theater is located in the Morris Museum at 6 Normandy Heights Road in Morristown, NJ. To purchase tickets in advance please call the box office at (973) 971-3706.

So if you are NY-NJ resident, why not crank up the jalopy and make the trek on in to Morristown and celebrate Bix Beiderbecke’s Birthday with the South Shore Syncopators. Monday night, March 14th at 8:00pm. Party hats optional.

Thank you for your kind attention.
