Brad Terry's query about what to do with his vinyl collection brought three
responses so far. I'll collate and send as a group, with apologies
beforehand for duplication, but it's going to both lists, so don't want to
miss anyone.

Craigslist and E-bay are the two most common routes. Checking with
Popsike.com to see if any are really valuable is not a bad idea to do first.
UNH also has quite a good jazz series and may be interested in some for
donation which, since it would be tax deductible, indirectly leads to cash.

Try to donate them to a library or university and get a tax deduction.
I gave mine (and hundreds of shellacs) to my grandchildren who have
figured
out a way to play them or donate them to institutions. I tried to give
them to Rutgers but Dan Morgenstern has thousands and does not need more.
However a jazz fan, whom I know, donated his shellacs and vinyls to
Stanford University, now in the process of beginning to locate and develop a

studies section similar to Rutgers.
I can give you the name of the individual in charge if you want it.

Pass on to Brad that many people have luck selling them through lists or
bulletin boards. Of course, that requires obtaining boxes to mail them.
Items in poor condition or very common titles that aren't worth a lot are
best sold in bulk to an individual or record store.

I'm sure there would be interest in seeing a list.

Norman writes: if anybody has experience with selling on e-bay, please
brief me--off list-- about the benefits/disadvantages/ precautions and
pitfalls. Our Jazz Society has just been recipient of some gorgeous,
original watercolors of jazz subjects by a wonderful local artist. Some are
historical in nature, renditions of jazz artists, some similar to historic
jazz photos. They were donated with the idea of benefitting our Jazz
Society. We have the "delicious" task of marketing these. And, we're
complete novices at it. Any other marketing ideas would also be welcomed.
An obvious option would be to put some photos on the Jazz Society of
Pensacola's website
www.jazzpensacola.com but it would not preclude other marketing avenues as
well.

Speaking of the JSOP website, I just posted a review of Alyn Shipton's
biography of Cab Calloway. If interested, see the website home page and
then click "Reviews." Thanks.
