Library to Host Free Concerts This Summer

The Friends of the Pleasanton Library will sponsor a series of free
music concerts this summer, beginning June 26 at 2 p.m. with the Dave
Rocha Jazz Band at the Pleasanton Library.

In this innovative and exciting excursion, Dave and his band will
perform selections that were composed exclusively by jazz trumpet
greats such as Miles Davis, Dizzy Gillespie, Clifford Brown, Freddie
Hubbard and Lee Morgan.

Next up on July 24, is Neely’s Rhythm Aces, also at 2 p.m. at the
Pleasanton Library.

Don Neely, vocalist Carla Normand and Neely’s Rhythm Aces, the sextet
from the Royal Society Jazz Orchestra of San Francisco, are renowned
for their authentic sound of hot, syncopated 1920s jazz, 1930s and
1940s swing, blues, Dixieland, vintage and traditional jazz.

They do it all, from romantic background music to the hottest dance
band rhythms and jazz—and everything in between. Neely’s Rhythm Aces
plays Gershwin, Fats Waller, Irving Berlin, Hoagy Carmichael, Cole
Porter, Johnny Mercer and many others in a colorful repertoire that
spans Tin Pan Alley, Vaudeville, the Cotton Club and Broadway.

The King Cotton Jazz Band will wind up the summer with Dixie flair on
August 28 at 2 p.m.

This Alta California favorite is a hard-driving band powered by a
strong rhythm section and known for its ensemble playing and vocals.
The King Cotton Jazz Band was formed to play Dixieland jazz in the
style heard during the traditional jazz revival in the 1950s when most
of the great artists from the golden age were still active. King
Cotton rolls with classic tunes from the 1920s: Pennies From Heaven,
Lady Be Good, Am I Blue?, Blue Skies, Coquette, Marie, Sweet Lorraine,
Fat Boy, Baby Won’t You Please Come Home and others.
