Black Eagles Observe 40th Anniversary Sept. 18
Leave it up to the New Black Eagle Jazz Band to find a unique way to celebrate their
40th anniversary. It's probably more appropriate to say "a unique place" in which
to celebrate.
On Sunday, September 18 from 1 to 5 p.m., the Eagles along with special guests and
their multitude of fans will gather in a 28,000-square-foot hanger surrounded by
vintage aircraft and automobiles for an afternoon of classic jazz and nostalgia.
The site is the headquarters of the Collings Foundation on Barton Road in the scenic
New England community of Stow, Massachusetts, 22 miles west of Boston. Founded in
1979, the non-profit Collings Foundation has acquired or restored American-built
automobiles, racecars and aircraft from the first half of the 20
th
Century. For the past 20 years, it has also sponsored the "Wings of Freedom Tour"
of World War II aircraft, visiting more than 2,000 cities and towns throughout the
United States and enabling the public to gain first-hand exposure to some "living
history."
The Black Eagles are regarded as one of the premier bands in the classic jazz tradition
performing today. They have appeared at major festivals over the years, toured the
UK, Europe and as far away as Singapore, performed worldwide with symphony orchestras,
and produced at least one recording a year.
Five of the original musicians will be on the bandstand for the September 18th event,
namely Tony Pringle, leader and cornet; Stan Vincent, trombone; Bob Pilsbury, piano;
Peter Bullis
, band manager and banjo; and
C.H. "Pam" Pameijer, drums. Billy Novick, reeds, has been with the band for the past
25 years, and Jesse Williams
on string bass came on board this year. Also in attendance will be drummer
Bill Reynolds who fills in regularly whenever Pameijer is not available.
The band plays at the Sherborn (Mass.) Inn on the second Thursday of the month and
will be traveling to Rockville, Maryland on Sunday, August 14 to perform for the
Potomac River Jazz Club.

The red cross knocked at my door asking if I could help towards the floods in Pakistan.
I said I would love to, but my hose only reaches the bottom of the driveway.
