I have heard the Merseys more than once, both live and on record.  In
1989 they might have been a West Coast style band, but the band I know
(still with some original members) is a very polished and swinging
band, and does not use a brass bass (even as far back as 1954 it used
a string bass)

/All the original members of the Merseysippi Jazz band are dead. The band now only
has one trumpet player, although it still attempts some Watters numbers. It is not
in any way polished, although it has a fine guitar player (who plays classical solo features in the
programmes) but these days, due to the preference of the leader, trumpeter John Higham,
he mainly plays banjo. The band only used a brass bass during the very few years that Robin
Tankard, a fine bass player, doubled in the band. Robin too is long dead.
