I had a similar experience to Tony's.  

At a Pianorama at one of the Sacramento Jazz Jubilees, now called Sacramento Jazz Festival and Jubilee, Earl Hines performed.  I don't think he even knew where he was.   

He would start a song, end up playing another one, do the same old cleshay (SP) series of notes over and over.  Then go into an ending and play maybe 30 tags.  It was awful... 

P.S.  How in the hell do you spell clashay, anyway?
