There's a small error in the text about George Bacquet's explanation of
Keppard not wanting the Creole Band to record:

>King Oliver records of seven years later Johnson's string bass was
>replaced by banjo and brass bass and the bass drum was not used, due
>to the same technical problems, which were hard to overcome by the
>acoustical recording process in use before 1925/26.

The only bass instrument on the Oliver recordings of 1923 is bass sax on the
Paramount session from December. There is no bass instrument on the Gennett,
Okeh or Columbia recordings.

It's interesting to me that so many acoustical recordings don't have bass
drum, but the first ODJB session for Victor, Sbarbaro is playing his bass
drum.
