That is a bit of a wild statement. Assuming that by `square` you mean that 
they didn`t swing.
There was certainly a `sameness` in their material.  `Moon and June` lyrics, 
16 bars and a middle eight and 8 bars to finish and tempo was pretty much 
dictated by the fact that it was dance music. Quickstep,foxtrot, waltz, 
tango was about  the sum and certainly the Beatles shook that up but to 
suggest that none of those bands swung is untenable. Dig out your old 78`s 
and listen
