I went to Salina, KS in the early 60's as a
"Missile Gypsy" -- working on the Atlas F Missile
sites which surrounded Salina.
And I started playing with a little dance band
that played all the "animal clubs" (Moose, elk,
etc) for sixty miles around.
We had a drummer who had a little cymbal that sat
up on top of his ride.
It looked like a truck had run over it. About
6-8 inches around, and wrinkled!! When he hit
it, it went "Splash!!"
And he used it the way Carlton Coon used his
splash in the 20's.
It was WONDERFUL.
As I said earlier -- the high-hat was not invented
until about 1930. So... the bands had lots of
stops, and those stops were punctuated by the
splash. If you listen carefully to Guy Lombardo's
early arrangements, you'll be surprised at how
much he counted on the splash.
I'm looking for one for my washboard!
I guess I'll have to buy one, and run over it with
the truck!!
